A massive methamphetamine haul has landed a McAllen man behind bars for nearly 16 years. Rolando Reyna, 28, pleaded guilty on April 10, 2013, to possession with intent to distribute approximately 29.76 kilograms of methamphetamine.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Corpus Christi, Reyna was arrested on November 18, 2012, at the United States Border Patrol checkpoint in Sarita. Agents found 44 bundles of methamphetamine hidden in a concealed compartment in his pick-up truck.
The methamphetamine was seized from Reyna as he attempted to transport it into the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico, with the intention of delivering it to Atlanta, Georgia. Reyna admitted to expecting a $10,000 payment upon successful delivery.
Reyna’s arrest was part of a larger DEA operation, and the seizure is believed to be the largest single haul of methamphetamine in the Corpus Christi division in the last five years.
U.S. District Judge Hayden Head handed down the sentence of 188 months (approximately 15.7 years) in prison, with five years of supervised release following completion of the prison term.
Reyna is currently in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The case was investigated by the DEA and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Brown IV.
This case highlights the significant consequences of methamphetamine trafficking in the region. The DEA and law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to disrupt and dismantle these operations.
