OCALA, FLORIDA – In a shocking turn of events, Romeo Lopez-Hernandez, a 37-year-old inmate at Coleman Federal Prison, has been found guilty of first-degree, premeditated murder in the death of his cellmate.
A federal jury delivered the verdict after a three-day trial, which revealed the gruesome details of the crime. Lopez-Hernandez was accused of using a torn bed sheet to strangle his cellmate to death on February 1, 2021. According to evidence presented during the trial, Lopez-Hernandez had made the improvised knife with which he committed the crime.
After the victim lost consciousness, Lopez-Hernandez continued to strangle him until he was sure that the victim had died. In a disturbing twist, Lopez-Hernandez later confessed to the murder and bragged about it to prison personnel. However, at trial, he changed his story and claimed that the victim had committed suicide.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Tyrie K. Boyer and Belkis H. Crockett.
Lopez-Hernandez faces a mandatory penalty of life in federal prison. His sentencing is scheduled for a future date in 2023.
