Ocala, FL – In a shocking turn of events, Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II has handed down a life sentence to Romeo Lopez-Hernandez, 37, of Coleman, Florida, for the first-degree, premeditated murder of his cellmate.

The federal jury delivered a guilty verdict on January 19, 2023, following a three-day trial. The evidence presented during the trial revealed a heinous crime that left the victim, whose name has not been released, dead on February 1, 2021.

Lopez-Hernandez used a torn bed sheet to strangle his cellmate, and in a twisted display of brutality, continued to choke the victim until he was sure they were dead. The defendant later confessed to the crime, even bragging about it to prison personnel. However, at trial, Lopez-Hernandez changed his story and claimed the victim had committed suicide.

The victim’s family and friends are said to be relieved that justice has been served, with many expressing gratitude to the investigators and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to bring Lopez-Hernandez to justice.

Lopez-Hernandez will now spend the rest of his life behind bars, serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of his cellmate. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
