Ronald Ray Norman, 32, Found Guilty of Felon in Possession of Firearm in Texas Court

A federal jury in Houston has convicted Ronald Ray Norman, 32, of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The conviction comes after a three-day trial and approximately two hours of deliberation.

The case against Norman began when law enforcement received information about him and the vehicle he was driving. Testimony revealed that Norman had been regularly using rental vehicles to evade capture.

On February 12, 2014, officers located Norman and the vehicle on Interstate 45 South. When they attempted to pull him over, Norman jumped out and fled on foot, while the passenger drove away in the vehicle. Norman was chased across all lanes of the highway, over retaining walls, and along both feeder roads before being apprehended.

During the foot chase, Norman was seen throwing a silver and black .38 caliber revolver onto the ground. He was also found in possession of five rounds of .38 caliber ammunition. Norman, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Norman’s defense argued that there were no other witnesses who saw him throw the weapon to the ground, and his wife testified that she had never seen him with a gun or ammunition. However, the jury was not convinced and found Norman guilty on both counts as charged.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner has set sentencing for October 31, 2014. At that time, Norman faces a minimum of 15 years and up to life in federal prison. He will remain detained pending the hearing. The case was investigated by the Houston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennie Basile and Joe Porto.
