In a brutal act of violence, Ronell Wilson, a 32-year-old New York City resident, took the lives of two New York City Police Department detectives, Rodney J. Andrews and James V. Nemorin, in a drive-by shooting on Staten Island on September 24, 2003.
Today, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, New York, United States District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis sentenced Ronell Wilson to death for the murders of the two detectives.
The sentencing follows a five-week evidentiary hearing that culminated on July 24, 2013, with a federal jury verdict unanimously recommending that the court impose the death penalty on Wilson.
United States Attorney Loretta E. Lynch stated, ‘Wilson’s death sentence marks the end of a ten-year odyssey in the relentless pursuit of justice.’
‘This sentence follows the recommendation of a jury of Wilson’s peers that justice requires the imposition of the ultimate punishment for the vicious and senseless murder of two husbands, two fathers and two protectors of the City of New York,’ Attorney Lynch continued.
‘With this sentence, we can only hope that the families of New York City Police Detectives Andrews and Nemorin will take some comfort in its finality.’
