Rosebud Man Jailed for Assault
A Rosebud, South Dakota, man has been brought to justice for a brutal assault. Melvin Floyd Hollow Horn Bear, age 39, was sentenced to time served, 1 year of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The crime took place in March 2013 at Pine Ridge, where Hollow Horn Bear struck a man repeatedly with a blunt object. The victim required stitches for the cuts on his face and head.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, presided over the sentencing hearing on May 12, 2014.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, stating that justice had been served. The community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the perpetrator has been held accountable for his actions.
The assault was a senseless act of violence that left the victim with physical and emotional scars. The sentence handed down by Chief Judge Viken is a reminder that such behavior will not be tolerated in our society.
