COVINGTON, Ky. – In a grim turn of events, Andrew Zaheri, 40, a former teacher from Morehead, Ky., was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison on Monday by U.S. District Judge David Bunning for the production of child pornography.
According to his plea agreement, Zaheri engaged in a sexual relationship with a minor student during the summer of 2022 while employed as a teacher at a local high school. The despicable behavior continued throughout the school year, with the predator preying on his victim even during school hours. During the course of this abuse, Zaheri produced sexually explicit images and videos using his cell phone.
Under federal law, Zaheri is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence, amounting to nearly 19 years behind bars. His release will be followed by 22 years of supervision under the U.S. Probation Office.
The charges were jointly announced by Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Michael E. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Louisville Field Office; and Col. Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police.
This investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Kentucky State Police, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Roth representing the United States in the prosecution.
The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information on Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
