Former Fairfield Worker Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Gun Charges
A federal judge in Birmingham has sentenced a former Fairfield Police Department maintenance worker to six years and six months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms.
U.S. District Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala handed down the sentence to Roy Ellis Hunter, 70, on one count of being a convicted felon who possessed four handguns on June 4, 2015.
Hunter pleaded guilty to the charge in October and must report to prison on May 15.
According to authorities, Hunter stole the guns from the police department and sold them to individuals who could not legally purchase firearms. ATF and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency agents worked together to stop the illicit flow of guns onto the streets.
In a monitored transaction at Hunter’s residence, an informant working with ATF agents paid Hunter $4,000 to buy 15 firearms, which were retrieved from his basement. Agents arrested Hunter the next day and recovered 31 firearms, ammunition, narcotics, and a decorative sword, all presumed to be stolen from the Fairfield Police Department.
ATF, with assistance from Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Royster prosecuted. The community is safer thanks to their work and this prosecution, officials said.
Hunter has a history of convictions, including federal racketeering and cocaine distribution charges in 1984 and federal counterfeiting charges in 1983.
