Former Illinois Elementary School Principal Sentenced to Federal Prison for Embezzlement

Roy Joseph Monti, 54, of St. Louis, Missouri, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison and six months of home detention for embezzling $113,061.87 from St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Smithton, Illinois.

The scheme, which took place from March 2017 to November 2019, involved Monti using his position as the school’s principal to embezzle funds from the school’s bank account. He attempted to cover up the thefts by noting purportedly valid expenses on the withdrawal slips, which turned out to be false and fraudulent.

As part of the investigation, it was discovered that Monti often carried large amounts of the stolen cash across state lines, which is a federal felony. The interstate transportation of stolen money is a serious offense that carries significant penalties.
