A Dominican man has pleaded guilty to re-entering the United States illegally, a federal crime that carries a hefty sentence. Rudys Osvaldo Torres, a 50-year-old man from the Dominican Republic, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal re-entry by a deported alien in federal court in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
The crime took place on or about March 15, 2021, when Torres was found in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, without permission from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reenter the United States. This is not the first time Torres has been deported from the US, and it’s unclear why he chose to return.
According to the indictment, Torres knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully reentered the United States, which is a felony offense. The law provides for a total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
US District Judge Stephanie L. Haines scheduled sentencing for December 18, 2023. The actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the crime and Torres’ prior criminal history, if any.
The investigation that led to Torres’ prosecution was conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Torres is currently facing a serious sentence, and it’s unclear what his future holds. His lawyer did not comment on the case, and Torres is expected to appear in court again in December to face sentencing.
In a statement, US Attorney Eric G. Olshan said that Torres’ actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the consequences of his actions. Olshan added that his office will continue to work tirelessly to enforce immigration laws and protect national security.
