Ruiz Gets 40 Years for Sick Online Exploitation

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Andres Camilo Ruiz, 31, of Miramar, Florida, will spend the next four decades behind bars after a federal judge slammed him with a 40-year prison sentence for a depraved online scheme to produce and distribute child pornography. Ruiz, sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roy K. Altman, will also face lifetime supervised release as a registered sexual offender upon his eventual release.

The case, brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, detailed a horrifying pattern of abuse that spanned from November 2018 to May 14, 2019. Ruiz, posing as a 12-year-old girl named “June” on various social media platforms, meticulously groomed and manipulated children across the country. He didn’t just stumble upon existing material; he actively created it.

According to court documents, Ruiz befriended unsuspecting children through web-based applications, building false trust before turning predatory. He escalated the abuse by sending explicit images and videos of other children to his victims, then coercing them into creating and sending similar content back to him. The sheer scale of Ruiz’s depravity is staggering: investigators found evidence he exploited over 50 children, with the youngest victim being a mere nine years old.

When authorities finally apprehended Ruiz, they uncovered an extensive digital archive of abuse. Over 1,100 images and videos, including depictions of children engaged in sadomasochistic acts, were seized from his cell phone and cloud account. This wasn’t a passive collection; it was the product of calculated exploitation and a deliberate effort to create and disseminate horrific material.

“This sentence sends a clear message that the production and distribution of child pornography will not be tolerated,” stated U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez. Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro of the FBI Miami field office added that the investigation highlights the FBI’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jodi L. Anton and Francis Viamontes skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served.

Ruiz was also ordered to pay restitution to his victims, though no amount of money can truly compensate for the trauma he inflicted. Court documents related to the case, under case no. 19-cr-060223, are available on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida website: www.flsd.uscourts.gov or http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov. This case serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance in protecting children.
