LOUISVILLE, KY – A 9-millimeter Ruger pistol changed hands in Louisville last September, but the possession of that firearm has landed its owner in serious hot water. Ryan Akeem Turner is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Turner’s troubles began on September 28, 2023, when he found himself in possession of the Ruger LC9S pistol. But this was not his first run-in with the law. Turner has a long history of convictions that prohibit him from owning firearms.
Records show Turner was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (heroin), convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and possession of a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (heroin) in Jefferson Circuit Court on February 22, 2021.
He was also convicted of complicity to receiving stolen property under $10,000 in Jefferson Circuit Court on the same day. More convictions followed, including 3 counts of trafficking in a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (more than 2 grams of heroin) and convicted felon in possession of a handgun, also in Jefferson Circuit Court, on October 13, 2015.
The defendant’s previous convictions include possession of a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (heroin) in Jefferson Circuit Court on October 15, 2015, and possession of a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (cocaine) in Jefferson Circuit Court on April 6, 2011.
The most recent conviction list includes a string of convictions in 2008, with Turner being convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (cocaine), tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a controlled substance, in the first degree, first offense (cocaine) in Jefferson Circuit Court on December 18, 2008.
Turner made his initial court appearance yesterday before a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, where he remains in custody pending trial. If convicted, Turner faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
This case is being investigated by the ATF and the LMPD, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Dahl prosecuting the case. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in local communities.
