A brazen attack on a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in North Las Vegas has landed a local man in prison. Ryan Joseph Ritter, a 31-year-old Las Vegas resident, was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison for assaulting and robbing a mail carrier on February 28, 2018.
According to court documents, Ritter ambushed the mail carrier and repeatedly swung a 13-inch metal pipe at their head, causing bodily injuries. The attack also included the theft of the mail carrier’s postal keys.
The case took over three years to reach a guilty plea, with Ritter entering a guilty plea in June 2021 to one count of aggravated robbery of a postal mail carrier. U.S. District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey handed down the sentence, which includes two years of supervised release following Ritter’s prison term.
Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada announced the sentencing. The U.S. Postal Service led the investigation into the assault, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Fang prosecuting the case.
The assault on the mail carrier was a frightening and traumatic experience. Ritter’s actions demonstrate a callous disregard for the safety and well-being of our postal workers, who risk their lives every day to deliver the mail.
