Defendant Pleads Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter

Ryntana Yazzie, a 34-year-old woman from Crownpoint, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a fatal crash that occurred on August 4, 2020.

According to court documents, Yazzie, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was driving south on Highway 371 outside Farmington when her vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and struck a truck driven by John Doe. Doe, who was driving northbound, died as a result of the crash.

The case was investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Department of Investigation and Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall is prosecuting the case.

At sentencing, Yazzie faces up to 8 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.

Yazzie was placed on conditions of release pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.

The guilty plea was announced by Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office.
