SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gilbert Ramirez, 25, and Michael Valentino Lovato, 33, both of Sacramento, are facing federal charges after a grand jury indictment revealed their alleged involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. The eight-count indictment, unsealed today following their arrest, accuses the pair of conspiring to flood Sacramento County with deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine.
U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the charges, detailing how, between April and July of 2022, Ramirez and Lovato allegedly worked together – and with others – to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine and a staggering 400 grams of fentanyl. Court documents indicate at least five separate instances where the pair directly distributed the potent opioid.
This wasn’t a small-time operation. We’re talking about enough fentanyl to kill tens of thousands. Enough meth to wreck countless lives. Sacramento is already reeling from the opioid crisis, and these two men allegedly poured gasoline on the fire. The investigation, a joint effort by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Sacramento Police Department, and the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, suggests a well-organized network was at play.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily G. Sauvageau is leading the prosecution, and the stakes are incredibly high. If convicted on the conspiracy charge alone, Ramirez and Lovato face a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $10 million fine. Additional penalties await for the distribution and possession charges. However, any actual sentence will be determined by the court, considering federal sentencing guidelines and statutory factors.
