SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Nichol Lomack, also known as Nichol Ramirez, was today locked away for 21 months for a dental fraud scheme that bilked UPS employees out of $726,300. United States District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. handed down the sentence, demanding Lomack pay back every cent.
The fraudulent dentist’s assistant worked under Dr. David M. Lewis from 2001 until November 2010, processing insurance claims for dental services. The duo targeted UPS employees with full dental coverage, offering cash incentives to get them into the chair or recruit more participants.
But it wasn’t just a sweet deal for those involved; Lomack and Lewis submitted false claims to Delta Health Systems, billing for work that was never done or unnecessary procedures. X-rays of temporary fillings were doctored to show tooth decay, justifying further treatment.
Lewis got his due with a three-year sentence and $75,000 fine, but the pain and suffering they caused won’t be easily forgotten. ‘This defendant assisted in a fraud scheme that not only plundered funds meant for essential services but inflicted pain on patients,’ Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert said.
The investigation was a joint effort by the U.S. Department of Labor, Inspector General’s Office, Employee Benefits Security Administration, and local partners. Assistant United States Attorney Todd A. Pickles prosecuted the cases with unwavering determination.
