Saeve Edward Evans, Assault on a Police Officer, Washington 2023

Washington DC – A local man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for firing 14 rounds at a Metropolitan Police Department officer in Northeast Washington DC.

Saeve Edward Evans, 38, of Washington D.C., was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assault on a police officer while armed, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term of over one year. In addition to the 10-year prison term, U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton ordered Evans to serve five years of supervised release.

The shooting occurred on August 1, 2023, at 5:28 a.m. at 1711 Benning Road, a three-story apartment building in Northeast Washington D.C. According to court documents, Evans was walking a dog at the time of the shooting and, after firing three rounds in the air, aimed at the officer and fired three times, then moved towards the apartment entrance.

The officer returned fire before taking cover behind his police cruiser. Evans then climbed the stairs to the third-floor landing and fired two more shots at the officer through large windows. In total, Evans fired 14 rounds at the officer.

Additional MPD officers responded to assist and entered the building, locating Evans on the third-floor landing. Before officers placed Evans under arrest, he said, ‘Ain’t no gun, I took it off me.’ Officers recovered the firearm on the third-floor landing, a black Springfield XD 9×19 pistol with an empty 16 round magazine. DNA evidence linked the gun to Evans, which was stolen on March 9, 2023, from the state of Texas.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin Song and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin Cloherty.

The incident has sparked concerns over public safety in the area, with many calling for increased police presence in the neighborhood.
