Samir Patel, Tax Evasion, Georgia 2021

A Georgia man has been caught in a web of deceit after pleading guilty to evading the proper assessment of his personal federal income taxes.

Samir Patel, a tax return preparer from Statesboro, Georgia, was a key player in a national return preparation business. In 2015, Patel purchased a franchise of the business in Claxton, Georgia, where he hired, trained and supervised tax preparers, and continued to prepare returns for customers.

However, the truth behind Patel’s involvement in the tax preparation business was far from clean. Court documents reveal that Patel willfully filed false income tax returns that underreported his income and evaded proper assessment of his personal taxes for years 2015, 2016, and 2017.

The investigation, led by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation unit, has shed light on the severity of Patel’s crimes. As a result, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.

The sentencing will be determined by U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall for the Southern District of Georgia, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg and U.S. Attorney Jill E. Steinberg made the announcement, highlighting the importance of upholding the law and ensuring accountability for those who break it.

Prosecutors Matthew C. Hicks, Richard J. Hagerman, and John P. Harper III will continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to those affected by Patel’s actions.
