Sallisaw Man Pleads Guilty to Firearm Charge, Faces Up to 10 Years in Prison
A 50-year-old man from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, has pled guilty to a firearm charge, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Samuel Jason Nutt faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his crime.
The guilty plea was entered in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, before the Honorable Steven P. Shreder, U.S. Magistrate Judge. Assistant United States Attorney Dean Burris represented the United States in the case.
Nutt’s crime is punishable by not more than 10 years imprisonment, up to a $250,000.00 fine, or both. However, if the court determines he is an armed career criminal, he will be sentenced to not less than 15 years imprisonment, up to a $250,000.00 fine, or both.
The charges against Nutt arose from an investigation by the Sallisaw Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The indictment alleged that on or about December 29, 2017, Nutt knowingly possessed a firearm, a Chinese Model 54-1, 7.62 x 25mm caliber pistol, serial number 3700126799, which had been shipped and transported in interstate commerce.
Nutt’s plea and the completion of a presentence investigation report have been ordered by the court. This case is a reminder of the importance of responsible gun ownership and the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
The investigation into Nutt’s crime was a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, and it highlights the need for continued cooperation and vigilance in enforcing federal firearms laws.
