Defendant’s Descent into Violence Ends in 289-Month Prison Sentence
A violent felon with a long history of aggression has been sentenced to 289 months in federal prison for his involvement in a shooting that left multiple victims seriously injured, according to a recent press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma.
Shawn Dale Sexton, 26, of Bristow, was convicted of Felon in Possession Firearms and Ammunition, a charge stemming from a high-speed chase that took place on July 23, 2017. According to eyewitnesses, Sexton was the driver of a white Jeep Wrangler that was involved in a shooting in Slick, Creek County, Oklahoma, and was continuing to drive through Bristow, firing his gun and causing serious bodily injury to multiple victims.
As Bristow police officers pursued Sexton, he fired his gun at officers, striking their patrol car. The officers pursued Sexton for two miles before he was finally apprehended. Sexton has been in custody since his arrest on July 23, 2017, and his recent sentencing marks the culmination of a long and complex investigation.
The prosecution of Sexton’s case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhood initiative, a joint effort between federal and local law enforcement agencies aimed at reducing violent crime and improving public safety. The case was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Joel-lyn A. McCormick, who praised the bravery and dedication of the Bristow Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for their role in bringing Sexton to justice.
“Sexton terrorized an entire community,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. “His actions threatened the lives of citizens and law enforcement alike. In the Northern District of Oklahoma, we will continue our relentless pursuit of dangerous felons who possess firearms, especially those who show no regard for human life. We must hold them accountable.”
The sentencing of Shawn Dale Sexton serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who recklessly wield firearms and disregard the law.
