Barbara Jean Goodwin, Sexual Abuse of a Ward, TX 2016

Shocked headlines from San Antonio, Texas, this week as former Central Texas Detention Facility-GEO Prison Guard Barbara Jean Goodwin, 35, faces a federal indictment for sexual abuse of a ward. The grim allegations claim Goodwin engaged in illegal acts with a prisoner under her authority between February and August 2016.

Goodwin’s charges are serious, with potential penalties including up to 15 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. She was arrested last night without incident and has since been released on bond following an appearance this morning.

The same federal grand jury also delivered a separate indictment against Ray Alexander Barr, 28, for providing contraband within the prison system. The 2016 incident involved methamphetamine and alcohol being offered to a federal prisoner.

Barr has already been arrested on a criminal complaint and is currently on bond. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

This investigation was led by United States Marshals Service deputies and FBI agents. Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah Wannarka and Christina Playton are prosecuting the cases for the government.

As always, it is important to remember that an indictment is merely a charge, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
