A Brutal Assault on Pueblo Land

ALBUQUERQUE – Valentino Sanchez, a 33-year-old San Felipe Pueblo man, has admitted to brutally assaulting a woman on Pueblo land in May 2012.

According to court records, Sanchez repeatedly struck and punched the victim on the head and back with his hands, kicked her, and struck her on the head and back with a stick. The assault left the victim with serious injuries, including an orbital fracture to the right side of her face and a small traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage to the left front part of the brain.

Sanchez was arrested on May 22, 2012, after an investigation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, Southern Pueblos Agency. He has been in federal custody ever since and remains detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

Under a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Sanchez pleaded guilty to two federal assault charges. He faces a maximum penalty of ten years of imprisonment at his sentencing hearing.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, Southern Pueblos Agency, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano A. Torrez.
