San Jose tech whiz Sudhish Kasaba Ramesh admitted in federal court today to intentionally accessing and damaging Cisco’s cloud infrastructure, causing over $1.4 million worth of damage to the company’s WebEx Teams application.
Ramesh, who resigned from his position at Cisco in April 2018, pleaded guilty to recklessly deploying a code that deleted 456 virtual machines on September 24, 2018. His actions resulted in over 16,000 WebEx Teams accounts being shut down for up to two weeks, and forced Cisco to spend $1.4 million on restoring the application and compensating affected customers.
According to the plea agreement, Ramesh accessed Cisco’s cloud infrastructure hosted by Amazon Web Services without permission. The 30-year-old faces a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 for intentionally accessing a protected computer without authorization and recklessly causing damage, as per 18 U.S.C. §§ 1030(a)(5)(B) and (c)(4)(A)(i)(I).
Charged in July 2020, Ramesh is currently released on bond with bail set at $50,000. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 9, 2020, before U.S. District Court Judge Lucy H. Koh.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with full cooperation from Cisco Systems, Inc. Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Knight and Elise Etter are prosecuting the case.
