Kankakee Felon Lands 6 Years for Illegal Firearm Possession
Urbana, IL – In a move aimed at keeping the streets of Kankakee safe, a local felon has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for violating firearms laws. Santos Salgado, 31, of the 800 block of E. Station St., Kankakee, was found guilty of two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Salgado was arrested in June 2016 and has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service ever since. During his trial, it was revealed that Salgado had prior felony convictions in Kankakee County, making his possession of firearms a serious offense.
According to court documents, Salgado was in possession of a .22 caliber handgun and a .22 caliber rifle on February 1, 2016, and a .45 caliber handgun on March 24, 2016. These findings were made possible through the joint efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Kankakee Police Department, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, ISP/KAMEG, and the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Freres was instrumental in prosecuting the case, bringing Salgado to justice for his crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of complying with firearms laws and the consequences of violating them.
Salgado was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release upon his release from prison. This added sentence serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to break the law. The people of Kankakee can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served.
The sentencing of Santos Salgado is a significant victory for law enforcement and the community. It demonstrates the commitment of the authorities to keeping the streets safe and ensuring that those who break the law face the consequences.
