Crime: Theft of Mail
A shocking case of postal worker corruption has come to light in Cleveland, Ohio. Sa’Shanna Estell, a 26-year-old mail processing associate with the United States Postal Services, was charged with theft of mail by a postal employee.
According to an indictment unsealed on an unknown date, Estell knowingly removed and stole from the mail a $3,870 cashier’s check, eight gift cards totaling approximately $330, an Apple iPad, a smartwatch, a pair of Reebok shoes, other clothing, two packages of THC edibles, and $76 in cash between July and September 2020.
The total amount stolen by Estell is estimated to be $4,594.67. This brazen act of theft is a betrayal of the public’s trust and highlights the need for increased security measures within the postal service.
The investigation into Estell’s crimes was conducted by the Cleveland Resident Office of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Andrea Isabella is prosecuting the case.
It is essential to note that an indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Estell, like any defendant, is entitled to a fair trial in which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Estell’s sentence will be determined by the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including her prior criminal records, if any, her role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. If convicted, her sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
