Scio Man Busted for Meat Inspection Act Violations

BUFFALO, N.Y.– Keith Middaugh, 38, of Scio, N.Y., pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of violating the Federal Meat Inspection Act, a crime that could land him in prison for up to a year and result in a $100,000 fine.

Between April 2010 and April 2011, Middaugh bought dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals without being registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to buy such animals, and without maintaining detailed transaction records. The Federal Meat Inspection Act requires any person involved in the business of handling such animals to register with the USDA and keep detailed records, failure to do so is a criminal offense.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango stated that the case was a result of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, and the New York State Police – Amity, under the direction of Captain Eugene Staniszewski.

The plea is a culmination of a lengthy investigation, and Middaugh’s sentencing is scheduled for May 9, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr.

Middaugh’s actions were not only a violation of the law but also a threat to public health and safety. The Federal Meat Inspection Act is in place to ensure that meat products are safe for consumption and that those involved in the industry are held accountable for their actions.

The case serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies will continue to work together to protect the public and uphold the law. As the investigation and prosecution of Middaugh demonstrate, no one is above the law, and those who engage in illegal activities will be held accountable.
