Ty Mauldin, a 35-year-old South Dakota man, pleaded guilty to ordering thousands of opioid pills by stealing the identities of medical professionals he worked with in Delaware. Mauldin used his access as a medical biller and credentialer to obtain medical professionals’ licensure information and order oxycodone pills from wholesale pharmaceutical suppliers. He also falsified his own health information to pose as a cancer patient and obtain pain management services, including an intrathecal pain pump and opioid prescriptions.
Mauldin’s scheme involved exploiting his access to electronic medical records and representing himself as a certified health professional to his colleagues and patients. He even convinced a Nurse Practitioner to let him perform Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy on patients and submitted false claims to Medicaid for reimbursement.
Mauldin faced charges of Aggravated Identity Theft and Obtaining Drugs by Fraud, and pleaded guilty to both counts. He faces a mandatory minimum of 2 years in prison on the Aggravated Identity Theft charge, which will run consecutively to any term of imprisonment imposed on the Obtaining Drugs by Fraud charge.
The case highlights the dangers of identity theft and the importance of protecting medical professionals’ licensure information. Mauldin’s actions not only put his victims at risk but also undermined the trust and integrity of the healthcare system.
