A St. Charles County woman pulled off one of the biggest heists in the region’s history, embezzling $3.8 million from her employer with the help of co-conspirators in China. Bridget Thebeau, 46, was sentenced to 90 months in prison on Monday.
Thebeau worked with suppliers in China to inflate purchase orders in exchange for kickbacks. She altered 152 real orders and created 82 completely fake ones, allowing her co-conspirators to wire more than half of the money to her bank account.
When her scheme was discovered, Thebeau tried to cover her tracks by deleting records, destroying her laptop and phone, and providing incomplete and untruthful answers to investigators.
The owner of Thebeau’s former company has been forced to sell assets to keep afloat after the embezzlement left the business struggling to recover.
The beauteous facade of international business was just a front for Thebeau’s greed, Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Ladendorf wrote in a sentencing memo. Thebeau’s motives were pure and simple: to line her own pockets.
