A deadly dose of fentanyl pills and loaded guns were found in a minivan in a Walmart parking lot in Nixa, Missouri, last August. Jason S. Thompson, 50, of Denver, Colorado, was camping in the vehicle when police arrived. He initially gave officers fake ID before fleeing on foot, but was quickly caught.
Once in custody, authorities discovered a small bag of cocaine, over $1,000 cash, and a large plastic bag containing nearly 140 grams of fentanyl pills. Two loaded firearms, a Glock model 19 and a HS Produkt Hellcat, were also found in the minivan.
Thompson’s rap sheet includes prior felony convictions for methamphetamine possession, firearm possession, and conspiracy to distribute multiple controlled substances. The fentanyl and firearms charges landed him a 20-year sentence in federal prison without parole.
Thompson was found guilty on January 6, 2026, after a two-day jury trial in federal court. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cameron A. Beaver, James J. Kelleher, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Hannah R. Lucas. The DEA, Nixa Police Department, and Missouri State Highway Patrol led the investigation.
