Thomas Markwell, Wire Fraud, Missouri 2023

⏱ 2 min read

Three scammers are accused of swindling a St. Louis-based cruise line out of more than $2 million. Thomas Markwell, 53, and Nathan Boyd, 50, were indicted in October for seven counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. Joanna Dettman, 50, was also charged with wire fraud.

Markwell, a senior director of events at the cruise line, allegedly approved fraudulent invoices from a St. Louis gifting company that he had ties to. The company, co-owned by Boyd, issued fake invoices for personal expenses, including those of Markwell’s romantic partners.

Markwell was fired from the cruise line in September 2023 after failing to return from Argentina, where he had traveled to get married. He was arrested on an Interpol Red Notice and extradited to the US on February 23.

Boyd and Dettman have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Markwell’s extradition and the indictment serve as a warning to those who think they can scam their way to easy money.
