Catherine Hamilton, Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, South Dakota 2025

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE – In a landmark sentencing, Catherine Hamilton, 55, of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Christine Hughes, 66, from North Jackson, Ohio, have been handed down severe penalties for their roles in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.

Their sentences were announced by U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, with U.S. District Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange presiding over the cases. Hamilton, who was sentenced on April 7, 2025, will serve 57 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and is required to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Hughes, sentenced on August 25, 2025, faces similar penalties: 37 months behind bars, 3 years of supervised release, and the same special assessment. Both women pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance earlier in the year, with Hamilton entering her plea on January 27, 2025, and Hughes following suit on May 27, 2025.

Court records reveal that Hamilton received several packages of methamphetamine through the United States Postal Service from Hughes. She then distributed this illegal substance to others within South Dakota, according to the investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Mitchell Police Department.

Mark Joyce, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, prosecuted the case with dedication. Hamilton and Hughes were immediately remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following their convictions, ensuring they face the full brunt of justice.

This hard-hitting sentence sends a stark reminder that the war on drugs continues to be fought on multiple fronts, with consequences for those who choose to traffic in this dangerous substance.
