Gulfport, MS – In a shocking turn of events, 27-year-old Semaj Jermal Jefferson has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a firearm in Mississippi.
According to court documents, Jefferson sold a semi-automatic rifle loaded with 10 live rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition to an individual at a Gulfport residence for $450 on August 16, 2018.
Jefferson’s crime comes despite his previous conviction for burglary of a dwelling in Harrison County, Mississippi, which renders him prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Jones.
Jefferson will face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr. on February 11, 2020.
The guilty plea marks a significant blow to Jefferson’s freedom, and serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
As our community continues to grapple with the issue of gun violence, this case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing our nation’s firearms laws.
