Federal prosecutors have secured a hard-won victory with the conviction of former Texas State Senator Carlos I. Uresti and his business partner, Gary L. Cain, in an elaborate $Million Ponzi scheme that ensnared investors and shocked the community.
The jury in San Antonio found both men guilty on all counts following a four-week-long trial, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Uresti, the District 19 State Senator, was also charged with securities fraud, unregistered securities broker activities, and engaging in monetary transactions with proceeds from unlawful activity.
United States Attorney John F. Bash emphasized the significance of the case, stating that the verdict serves as a stark reminder of the equal justice under law principle, regardless of one’s status or title. ‘No matter who you are, no matter your position, you will be held accountable for your actions,’ Bash added.
The evidence presented at trial revealed a scheme where Uresti and Cain骗取投资者资金,用于支付早期投资者的回报以及个人开销,包括礼物、旅行、豪华汽车、管制药物,甚至雇佣妓女。Uresti还通过虚假陈述和隐瞒佣金收入来招募投资者。
Both defendants now face substantial prison sentences, up to 20 years for each fraud charge and ten years for each money laundering charge. Sentencing is scheduled for June 25, 2018.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Public Corruption Task Force, a collaborative effort involving investigators from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Unit.
