COLUMBIA, SC – Sergio Smith, age 31, is headed to federal prison for twelve years after being sentenced today for his involvement in a sprawling, thirteen-year drug trafficking operation that stretched across the Southeast. Smith, a key distributor, was sentenced by a federal judge and will also face ten years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The conspiracy, as detailed by United States Attorney Beth Drake, wasn’t some small-time operation. Members flooded multiple states – South Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas – with millions of dollars’ worth of cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana. Smith specifically operated within Anderson, South Carolina, working directly under co-defendant Walter Lee, pushing poison into the community.
Assistant US Attorney Andy Moorman laid out the case to the court, emphasizing Smith’s lengthy criminal history, his deep involvement in the conspiracy, and his actions *after* getting caught. These factors, Moorman argued, justified a substantial prison term. This wasn’t just about moving drugs; it was about a pattern of disregard for the law and the harm inflicted on others.
The bust wasn’t just about putting Smith behind bars. Law enforcement hauled in a staggering amount of evidence: over $1.5 million in U.S. currency, more than 5 kilograms of cocaine, significant quantities of marijuana and crack, and a cache of firearms. This indicates a well-funded, heavily armed organization that posed a serious threat to public safety.
The investigation was a coordinated effort, a testament to the power of multi-agency cooperation. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson Police Department, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville Department of Public Safety, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Richland County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Franklin County (GA) Sheriff’s Office, and Douglas County (GA) Sheriff’s Office all played a role. This case was prosecuted as part of the US Attorney’s Office’s Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a Department of Justice program designed to dismantle large-scale drug trafficking rings.
Assistant US Attorneys Andy Moorman, Bill Watkins, and Jeanne Howard of the Greenville office handled the prosecution. While Smith is now facing the consequences, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities suggest further arrests and prosecutions are likely as they continue to unravel the remaining threads of this dangerous network. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report any further developments.
