A Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for his role in a violent crime that went horribly wrong. Seth John Lee McGraw, 25, pleaded guilty in April to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and one count of possession of an unregistered firearm.
The incident occurred on August 24, 2024, when McGraw met with another individual in Cedar Rapids to sell marijuana. However, the deal did not go as planned, and McGraw pulled out a firearm, firing multiple shots at the individual, striking them twice. Law enforcement officers later searched McGraw’s apartment and found multiple firearms and drugs.
One of the firearms discovered at McGraw’s apartment was a short-barreled rifle that was not properly registered to him. McGraw was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams to 216 months’ imprisonment, followed by a five-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
McGraw is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
The case is also part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that seeks to eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect communities from violent crime. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of community-based initiatives to prevent such crimes from occurring. As the nation continues to grapple with issues of crime and public safety, this case serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to address these issues.
