Two Cortland County Residents Face Federal Charges for Child Exploitation
A heinous crime has shaken the quiet streets of Cortland, New York. Christopher M. Perry, 35, and Sarah R. Gates, 38, have been arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of a child.
According to a federal criminal complaint, the alleged abuse began in 2017 and involves a child born in 2014. The complaint alleges that Perry and Gates engaged in sexually explicit conduct with the child for the purpose of producing visual depictions of that conduct.
The charge filed against the couple carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life, and registration as a sex offender.
The investigation is ongoing, and the City of Cortland Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. The public can call 607-758-8303 to report any relevant information.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the City of Cortland Police Department, and the New York State Police-Computer Crimes Unit are conducting the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sahar L. Amandolare is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood.
Project Safe Childhood is a federal initiative launched in 2006 to combat the growing problem of child exploitation. The program brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children online, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The defendants appeared in federal court before United States Magistrate Judge Andrew T. Baxter, who ordered them to be detained in federal custody pending resolution of their cases. The charges against Perry and Gates are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
