Sex Offender Sentenced to 18 Months

Portland, Maine – Robert Wayne Lyon, a 27-year-old former resident of Wells, Maine, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, announced United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II.

Lyon, who pleaded guilty to the offense on October 29, 2013, was sentenced by Judge Nancy Torresen to 18 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. According to court records, Lyon was required to register as a sex offender under state and federal law after pleading guilty to Sexual Conduct with a Minor in Arizona in 2007.

Lyon acknowledged in 2009 that his obligation to register as a sex offender was a lifetime requirement, and that he had to comply with the registration requirements of any state he moved to. However, Lyon left Arizona and moved to Arkansas and then Missouri before arriving in Maine in 2012 without ever registering as a sex offender in any of those states.

Federal authorities arrested Lyon on July 2, 2013, after he failed to register as a sex offender in Maine. This case was investigated by the Wells Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Lyon’s sentence is a result of his failure to comply with the requirements of the federal sex offender registration program. The program is designed to provide law enforcement with information necessary to protect the public from sex offenders who may pose a risk to the community.

Robert Wayne Lyon’s sentence serves as a reminder that failure to comply with the requirements of the federal sex offender registration program can result in serious consequences, including imprisonment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that those who fail to register as sex offenders are held accountable for their actions.
