Sex Offender Sentenced to 37 Months in Federal Prison

Montgomery, Alabama – Convicted sex offender Anthony Carl Roberson, a 42-year-old resident of Chilton County, Alabama, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, United States Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced today.

Roberson was convicted of one count of aggravated sodomy in Georgia in 1996 and was required to register as a sex offender. However, on August 2012, he traveled from Georgia to Alabama and relocated to Chilton County without registering as a sex offender in the State of Alabama.

During his guilty plea hearing, Roberson admitted that he knew he was required to register and update his registration as a sex offender if he moved to another state. He also admitted that he did not register in Alabama within 72 hours of his arrival.

Chief United States District Judge W. Keith Watkins sentenced Roberson to 37 months in federal prison to be followed by 10 years of supervised release. Roberson remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending placement by the Bureau of Prisons.

The case was investigated jointly by the United States Marshals Service and Chilton County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Jerusha T. Adams prosecuted the case.

U.S. Attorney George L. Beck, Jr. stated, ‘This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the importance of sex offender registration. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to protect the public and ensure that sex offenders comply with the law.’
