Local Man Jailed For Sex Offense

Nathan First In Trouble, a 34-year-old White River man, has been sentenced to 12 months and 1 day of custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for failing to register as a sex offender.

First In Trouble was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in federal court in April 1998 and was ordered to register as a sex offender. However, between February and April 2013, he registered as a sex offender at his father’s residence in Mellette County, but was not actually staying there. He was working and staying in Pierre during that time, and failed to update his residence and employment information.

First In Trouble was arrested in April 2013 and was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. He was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 17, 2013, and pled guilty on September 16, 2013.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which was handed down by Judge Roberto A. Lange on November 26, 2013. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuting the case.

First In Trouble’s failure to register as a sex offender has resulted in a lengthy sentence, one that will keep him off the streets for the next year and a half. The U.S. Marshals Service will be keeping a close eye on him during his supervised release.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender, and the consequences that come with failing to do so. Nathan First In Trouble’s sentence is a harsh one, but it is a necessary step in keeping our communities safe.
