Counterfeit Currency Charge Rocks Ohio Community
A Delaware man has been charged with passing and possessing counterfeit currency in the Northern District of Ohio.
According to a federal indictment, Shakeel Jeffcoat, 28, of Wilmington, Delaware, allegedly passed counterfeit $100 United States federal reserve notes and possessed counterfeit $100 United States federal reserve notes on February 5, 2013.
The indictment charges Jeffcoat with one count of passing counterfeit currency and one count of possessing counterfeit currency. If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court after review of factors unique to the case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
The maximum sentence for these charges is not specified, but in most cases, it will be less than the maximum. The case is being presented by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Sassé after an investigation by the United States Secret Service.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
