Shakir Michael Convicted in Gun Possession Case

ALBANY, NEW YORK – A federal jury has convicted Shakir Michael, age 37, of Albany, New York, of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction, announced by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Special Agent in Charge Delano A. Reid of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, New York Field Division, is a serious blow to the defendant’s freedom.

According to the evidence presented in court, Michael was found to be in possession of a loaded Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun. This was a clear violation of federal law, which prohibits felons from carrying firearms. Michael’s prior convictions of felony offenses under New York State law made him a prime target for law enforcement.

The jury’s verdict was a result of a thorough investigation conducted by the Albany Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert A. Sharpe.

Michael faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for his crime. He will remain in custody until his sentencing scheduled for August 4, 2015, by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino.

The jury acquitted Michael of a separate charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

This case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of breaking federal law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates on Michael’s sentencing.
