A brazen carjacking in Philadelphia’s Germantown section in March 2022 has led to a guilty plea from one of the perpetrators. Shamire Young, 20, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to carjacking, a federal offense.
According to court documents, Young and three other individuals stole a vehicle from a gas station on Wissahickon Avenue near Lincoln Drive on the morning of March 11, 2022. The victim had pulled into the station and left the vehicle unattended while he went inside the shop. Three men, brandishing handguns, approached the vehicle and forced the victim into a nearby cluster of trees. The victim’s passenger was also forced out of the vehicle.
After physically assaulting the victim, the assailants got back into both vehicles and sped away down Lincoln Drive toward I-76. The victim’s stolen vehicle, owned by a local dealership and on loan to the victim, was later located using the dealership’s tracking technology in the Kingsessing section of the city.
The Philadelphia Police Department conducted a forensic analysis of evidence found inside the vehicle, identifying Young as one of the carjackers. The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Philadelphia Police Department collaborated on the investigation.
U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero praised the joint effort between law enforcement agencies, stating, ‘Our Office is committed to supporting the Philadelphia Police Department in its work to investigate and deter violent crime, which includes our partnership on the joint carjacking task force.’
Young’s guilty plea comes as a result of the investigation and collaboration between federal and local authorities. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of carjacking and the importance of continued efforts to combat violent crime in Philadelphia.
Shamire Young, 20, pleaded guilty to carjacking in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The exact sentence or outcome is not specified in the source.
