A Cedar Rapids man has been charged with a serious crime after being found guilty of possessing a handgun and methamphetamine.
Shane LaGrange, age 36, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
The charges stem from an incident on December 29, 2017, when LaGrange was arrested by officers from the Cedar Rapids Police Department. At the time of his arrest, LaGrange was found to be in possession of at least five grams of pure methamphetamine and a handgun.
LaGrange has pleaded guilty to the charges and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He also faces a fine of up to $8,250,000.00 and eight years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew J. Cole and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Safe Streets Task Force, which is composed of representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
LaGrange is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. The sentencing hearings will be scheduled after a presentence report is prepared.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
