Ocala, Florida – A ruthless assault case has left a trail of blood and trauma, but justice has finally been served.

A 51-year-old inmate from Texas has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for his role in a vicious attack on a fellow inmate at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County.

Shane McMillan was found guilty by a jury of assault with the intent to commit murder and possession of a prohibited object by a federal inmate.

According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, McMillan followed another inmate into a cell, closed the door, and then stabbed the victim approximately 10 times with a shank on July 9, 2023.

The victim suffered multiple puncture wounds to his neck, chest, and torso, but miraculously recovered from the injuries after being transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

When interviewed by the FBI, McMillan admitted that he wanted to kill the victim.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson.

McMillan’s brutal actions have been met with outrage, and the sentencing of 25 years in federal prison is a testament to the justice system’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

As a society, we must continue to work towards creating a safer and more just environment for all, especially those who are vulnerable and incarcerated.
