Shannon White, Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death, North Carolina 2023

A federal jury in Asheville has delivered a guilty verdict to Shannon White, 43, of Bryson City, North Carolina, for distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death.

According to the evidence presented at trial, White was involved in the distribution of narcotics in Jackson and Swain Counties. White, an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, supplied heroin to a victim identified as ‘J.F.’ on January 27, 2019. However, the substance White provided turned out to be fentanyl, which ultimately led to J.F.’s overdose death.

Furthermore, the trial established that White continued selling narcotics even after learning of J.F.’s death. White also falsely accused several other individuals of committing the crime.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray commended the Swain County Sheriff’s Office and the DEA for their investigation. Murray also acknowledged the invaluable assistance provided by the FBI and the Cherokee Indian Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Kent is prosecuting the case.

At sentencing, White faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. White is currently in custody.

The conviction of Shannon White serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of heroin and fentanyl trafficking.
