Two Chinese nationals have been caught in the act of peddling counterfeit perfume in New York.
Shaoxiong Zhou, 42, and Shaoxia Huang, 33, both of Shantou, Guangdong, China, pleaded guilty to trafficking in counterfeit perfume in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Zhou pleaded guilty on August 3, 2011, to one count of trafficking in counterfeit goods, while Huang pleaded guilty on the same day to the same charge.
The duo admitted to offering counterfeit perfume to prospective buyers at a Las Vegas trade show in August 2010. A cargo shipment containing the fake perfumes was purchased and shipped to the United States in 2011, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizing the shipment upon arrival.
The shipment contained over 30,000 units of perfume bearing counterfeit marks and made to resemble fragrance products from well-known brands, including Lacoste, Polo Black, and Armani Code.
At sentencing, both defendants face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million.
The case is part of a federal investigation into the importation and distribution of counterfeit perfume and cosmetics products being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
