Shawn Brown, Child Porn Distribution, NJ 2023

TRENTON, N.J. – Shawn Brown, a 35-year-old resident of Ewing, New Jersey, will spend over eleven years behind bars after being sentenced today to 135 months in prison for the vile act of distributing images of child sexual abuse. U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced the sentence, a grim reminder of the predators lurking in the digital shadows.

Brown previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Anne E. Thompson to one count of a three-count indictment, admitting to distributing child pornography over the Internet. The sentencing took place in Trenton federal court, a somber scene following a disturbing investigation. The evidence painted a clear picture of Brown’s depravity.

Court documents reveal that on July 14, 2013, Brown actively distributed a video depicting the sexual abuse of a child to another individual through instant messaging. The initial alert came when an undercover agent stumbled upon images and videos containing child pornography that Brown had brazenly made available on a peer-to-peer file sharing network. Authorities didn’t have to look far; tracing the username and IP address led directly to Brown’s residence.

The search of Brown’s electronic devices, authorized by a warrant, uncovered even more sickening details. Brown wasn’t just a distributor; he was an active predator, using aliases to contact underage girls online. He crafted a fake profile, pretending to be a teenage boy to groom and manipulate potential victims through instant messaging and social media. This wasn’t a one-time offense, but a pattern of calculated and disturbing behavior.

Judge Thompson didn’t stop at the 135-month prison sentence. She also imposed a lifetime of supervised release, ensuring Brown will be monitored for the rest of his days. This is a small measure of protection for potential future victims, but it underscores the severity of his crimes.

The investigation was spearheaded by special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Terence S. Opiola. Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly Lorber of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton skillfully prosecuted the case. Lisa Van Hoeck Esq., of the Trenton Assistant Federal Public Defender’s office, represented the defendant, Shawn Brown.
