Shawn Mackenzie Tant, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, West Virginia 2021

Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Parkersburg Man in Prison

A Parkersburg man has received a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of a serious crime. Shawn Mackenzie Tant, 43, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The crime occurred on or about January 26, 2021, when Tant was found to be in possession of a Harrington and Richardson .38-caliber revolver. This revolver was discovered by officers from the Parkersburg Police Department during a routine stop.

Tant’s lengthy history of criminal activity played a significant role in his sentencing. The defendant admitted to having three prior felony convictions in Wood County Circuit Court for delivery of a controlled substance. Additionally, Tant has been convicted of three domestic battery incidents, as well as charges of domestic assault, battery, and battery of a police officer.

A federal law prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition. Tant’s actions directly violated this law, resulting in the severe consequences he now faces.

United States Attorney Will Thompson commended the investigative work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Parkersburg Police Department. Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. imposed the sentence, while Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe prosecuted the case.

This case is a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to federal laws and regulations. Those who have previously committed crimes and are found to be in possession of firearms will face severe consequences, as seen in Tant’s case.
