NEW ORLEANS, LA – Shawn Rabathaly, a 23-year-old New Orleans resident, pleaded guilty on February 28, 2023, to violating the Federal Gun Control Act.
Rabathaly was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2).
Court documents revealed that Rabathaly was under surveillance by investigators when they observed him placing an Anderson Model AM-15, 5.56 caliber assault rifle into a vehicle he occupied.
Rabathaly is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his criminal history, which includes a previous conviction for illegal possession of a controlled substance in Orleans Parish.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Dustin Strauss of the Violent Crimes Unit.
Rabathaly was sentenced to 65 months in prison for the crime.
Shawn Rabathaly, age 23, of New Orleans, Louisiana, was previously convicted of a felony offense in Orleans Parish for illegal possession of a controlled substance.
