Shawn Sawa, Methamphetamine Trafficking, California 2024

A federal jury in Fresno, California, has convicted Shawn Sawa, 37, of operating a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation that generated an estimated $1.5 million in profits.

The verdict, handed down in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, caps a years-long investigation by the Fresno Forfeiture Unit and other law enforcement agencies into Sawa’s alleged role in importing and distributing methamphetamine in the Central Valley.

Prosecutors alleged that Sawa, a Fresno resident, used his network of associates to smuggling methamphetamine from Mexico into the United States, where it was sold to dealers and users throughout the region.

According to court records, Sawa’s operation was responsible for distributing an estimated 10 kilograms of methamphetamine per month, generating an estimated $1.5 million in profits.

Sawa’s conviction stems from a 2022 indictment that charged him with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, as well as other related offenses. He faces a potential sentence of up to life in prison, as well as significant fines and forfeiture of any ill-gotten gains.

The case was prosecuted by Cody S. Chapple, Joseph Barton, Mark W Coleman, and Chan Hee Chu of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, with assistance from the Fresno Forfeiture Unit.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert said, “This conviction demonstrates our commitment to dismantling the violent and destructive methamphetamine trade in the Central Valley. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring those responsible to justice.”
